How to Handle a Counteroffer

Most career advisors suggest caution, even when the offer looks good.

1. Ask yourself if the original reason for leaving was purely financial — if not, a raise likely won't resolve it.
2. Consider how trust may shift after resigning and reversing, on both sides.
3. Compare the counteroffer against your original opportunity's full package, not just the number.
4. It's fine to say no to a counteroffer respectfully and follow through with your original plan if that's still the better fit.
