Frame it around moving toward something, not escaping something.

  1. Focus on what you're seeking (growth, scope, a specific kind of work) rather than what you're fleeing.
  2. Keep any negative context brief and factual — extended complaints about a former employer raise flags.
  3. If the reason is compensation, it's fine to say so honestly and briefly rather than inventing a more "acceptable" reason.
  4. Practice this out loud — it comes up in nearly every interview, and a rehearsed, calm answer sounds far more confident than an improvised one.
