The safest rule: dress slightly more formal than the company's daily norm.

  1. Finance, law, consulting: a suit or equivalent formal business attire is still the safe default.
  2. Corporate/tech: business casual — collared shirt or blouse, slacks or a clean dress, no jeans unless you've confirmed the culture is very casual.
  3. Startups and creative fields: neat, put-together casual is usually fine — but avoid anything too worn-in or overly casual (graphic tees, shorts).
  4. When genuinely unsure, ask the recruiter directly what's appropriate — it's a completely normal question and shows good judgment.
  5. Whatever you wear, make sure it's clean, fits well, and you've worn it before — an interview is the wrong place to test a new outfit.
