  1. If the application explicitly marks it optional, a strong, specific letter is still a differentiator most candidates skip.
  2. For high-volume, junior roles with an ATS-only process, a short letter rarely hurts and occasionally gets read.
  3. For roles where communication skill is core to the job (writing, marketing, client-facing), skipping it can actively work against you.
  4. If time is extremely limited, prioritize tailoring the resume first — but a short, specific letter is usually a better use of 15 minutes than a fifth resume tweak.
