How to Address a Cover Letter When You Don't Know the Hiring Manager

A little research usually solves this — but here's the fallback when it doesn't.

  1. Check the job posting, company "About" or "Team" page, and LinkedIn for the actual hiring manager or department head first.
  2. "Dear [Team Name] Hiring Team" (e.g., "Dear Marketing Hiring Team") is a solid, specific fallback.
  3. Avoid "To Whom It May Concern" — it reads as generic and dated.
  4. "Dear Hiring Manager" is an acceptable neutral default if nothing more specific is findable.
