How to Show, Not Tell, in a Personal Statement

The classic writing advice applies especially strongly here.

  1. Instead of "I am a resilient person," describe a specific moment that demonstrates resilience and let the reader draw the conclusion.
  2. Use sensory, concrete detail rather than abstract character claims.
  3. Let dialogue or a specific quote do some of the emotional work instead of stating feelings directly.
  4. After drafting, circle every adjective describing your character and check whether a scene could replace it instead.
