The terms are used differently depending on country and field.

  1. In the US and Canada, a resume is a 1-2 page summary for most industries; a CV is longer and used mainly for academia, research, and medicine.
  2. In the UK, Ireland, and much of Europe, "CV" is simply the general term for what Americans call a resume.
  3. Academic CVs include publications, grants, teaching experience, and conference talks — categories a standard resume never has.
  4. If a job posting says "CV" outside the US, treat it exactly like a resume request unless it's an academic or research role.
