How to List Skills on a Resume (With Examples)

A skills section is only useful if it's specific and verifiable.

  1. Group skills by category (Technical, Tools, Languages) rather than one long list.
  2. Skip generic soft skills like "team player" — show them through bullet points instead.
  3. List tools by name and version/level where relevant: "Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP)" beats "Excel."
  4. Order skills by relevance to the specific job, not alphabetically.
  5. Only list a skill if you could comfortably answer a follow-up question about it in an interview.
