1. Ask people who can speak specifically and positively about your work, not just anyone senior.
2. Give at least two weeks' notice whenever possible — rushed letters tend to be generic.
3. Provide context: the role or program, key points you'd love them to mention, and your resume.
4. Offer a graceful out: "If you don't feel you can write a strong letter, no worries at all" — this protects you from a lukewarm letter.
